2009 L.A. Auto Show: Chevrolet Cruze Debut

General Motors will debut the North American version of its new, small sedan, the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, at the L.A. Auto Show.

While already on sale in other markets, the U.S. version of the global model will be built in Ohio. Replacing the Chevy Cobalt/Pontiac G5, the Cruze will be offered in base, LS, LT and LTZ trim level levels. Features include front, side-impact and head-curtain airbags, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and electronic stability control with rollover sensing.

Buyers can choose between two four-cylinder engines: a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter or 140-horsepower turbocharged 1.4-liter with E85 capablity. A six-speed automatic or manual transmission round out the drive train. Overseas, the Cruze is available with a turbocharged diesel, but no word on whether that engine will come here.

Europeans got a Korean-built Cruze earlier this year and Chevy’s European division campaigned a three-car team in the World Touring Car Championship series.

GM reportedly spent $4 billion and more than two years developing the Cruze, which will eventually be built in seven plants worldwide. Despite global production, GM says the Cruze built for North America will differ only slightly from the vehicle sold elsewhere. The Cruze earned top safety ratings in Australia and Europe.

The Cruze goes on sale late summer of 2010. Pricing has yet to be announced.
