GM announced today that the deal to sell mega-SUV brand Hummer to Chinese-based Sichuan Tengzhong has fallen through.

A Bloomberg report quotes Hummer spokesman Nick Richards as saying the wind-down of the unit has begun and will take several months, but the caveat remains that if other offers are made the brand could still be sold.

This is the situation that led to a deal to sell Saab to Dutch sports car maker Spyker, which was completed yesterday. A proposal to purchase the company by Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg fell through in November, leaving Saab’s fate in serious doubt.

While Tengzhong couldn’t get clearance from Chinese regulators to OK the deal on time, China’s assistant commerce minister, Wang Chao, said the government didn’t block the bid, Bloomberg reports.

GM will honor Hummer warranties and provide parts and service to owners worldwide, Automotive News reports. There are 153 dealers in the U.S., although not all are standalone stores.

GM bought the brand in 1999 from AM General, which still makes the military version. Sales peaked at 71,524 in 2006, but had fallen to 9,046 last year.
