Observations about cars and the auto industry

2012 MPG Track Day: 2012 Coda Sedan

Don’t feel bad if you just asked yourself, “What’s a Coda?” The electric car company was founded in 2009, which makes it a newcomer in a new vehicle segment. It’s an ambitious undertaking to be sure. You want to make a car? Great. Spend all the design, development and pre-production costs to make a few vehicles. Send two to the feds so they can wreck them and one or two to the EPA for emissions testing. It ain’t cheap. With that in mind, I will say the Coda looks and feels well built. There are a few expected features lacking, such as auto-down driver’s window. What’s more important, however, is how the Coda drives: it is in every way comparable to its gasoline-powered compact sedan competitors. Quiet, comfortable and it possesses the pleasing, instantaneous EV torque curve. Range is estimated at 125 miles and the EPA rates it at a combined 73 eMPG.

Verdict: If hatchbacks aren’t your thing, this five-seat EV is worthy of consideration.
