2012 MPG Track Day: 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo

The quirky looking Veloster arrived last year and was well received for the most part. One criticism was the sporty look didn’t deliver when it came power. Enter the turbo version, with 201-horsepower from the 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine. That puts it squarely in the ring with the Honda Civic Si and VW GTI. I wanted to like this car more, however a long clutch throw results in a big drop in engine speed when shifting at or near redline. There’s more torque steer than I like. On the plus side, the seat is comfortable and well-bolstered, good on-center steering feel and handling, and the six-speed manual’s shifter has a short enough throw. As is the case with just about every 2+2 coupe, the rear seat isn’t hospitable for adults.

Verdict: A shorter throw for the clutch would make this a better performer, more fun to drive, and maybe even wipe “Tiburon” from people’s lips.
